Who are we?
We are a group of people of different ages who belong to the Canarias Cohousing Association, whose purpose is to promote “Active Aging.”.
According to the WHO: The three pillars of active aging are: physical well-being (health), mental well-being (participation in society in accordance with the needs, capabilities, and desires of older persons, both individually and collectively), and social well-being (security, protection, and care for people). To this end, the WHO informs and supports the creation of collaborative housing communities. What do we want?
We want to be designers of “how, where, and with whom” to live our old age, without waiting for that stage of life to arrive (for some, it’s already approaching). We want to live vigorously, sharing our knowledge, experiences, support, and affection, not only with our group but also with the social environment where we are located. Furthermore, we fervently desire to share our project with young people who embrace the same lifestyle, bringing energy and renewed experiences.This type of community is internationally known as “Cohousing.”
Each person will have complete independence in their own finances and living quarters, but with the advantages of sharing large common spaces that foster social relationships, fostering friendship, solidarity, and caring, avoiding unwanted loneliness, and making it easier for young couples to balance family life by collaborating in the care of their children. How do we want to live?
Living together pleasantly, sharing a philosophy of life based on mutual aid, non-profit, and self-managed, in functionally adapted housing that allows people to remain there until the end of their lives without relying on relatives or resorting to nursing homes. Intergenerational, offering young people the opportunity to obtain housing at below market cost and the assistance that can be provided to facilitate family harmony. It will consist of small homes and large common areas for socializing (social relations, services, daycare, infirmary, care for dependents, gardens, orchard, and whatever the community can afford for the benefit of its inhabitants.
What have we done?
We have created an intergenerational collaborative housing cooperative (registered on October 3, 2021) called “Cohousing El Principio” Sdad. Coop. Canaria.
We have done this with dedication and enthusiasm to ensure the project is completed in the shortest possible time.
